the honey project

Identity, collateral materials and packaging for the Unión de Asociaciones de Apicultores del Estado de Yucatán. This union brings together over 400 Maya beekeepers from four cooperatives located throughout the state: Maxcanú, Mahas, Santa Elena, and Valladolid.

hach = pure or true
kaab = honey

This project stems from our collaboration with Cooperativa Lol-Balché in Santa Elena, Yucatán. Several months after the research, discovery, and design phase, Maria Rogal met with presidents of the four cooperatives, who also formed the Union's board. Wanting to also bring their honey direct to market, they agreed to combine efforts, which had already begun when they formed the union earlier in 2007. We worked with the cooperatives to name the new product. After a significant investment of time searching for an appropriate name in Maya that a) would be intelligible to non-Maya speakers and b) a name not already trademarked, we (clients, their families, the designers and other interested parties) agreed that "Hach Kaab" was a perfect fit.

This should not be confused, although, with our other project for Hach Kii' Ka'ab, which means "very delicious juice."
